The participation of the railway modal in the transport of cargo through the ports of Paraná was higher in the last month of January. Compared to the 31 days of the same month last year, the increase was 63%. In the first month of this year, 569,559 tons arrived or left in wagons. The volume is equivalent to 13.7% of the total handled in the period.
In January 2021, 301,434 tons – equivalent to 8.4% of the total handled in that month – were transported by rail. “The participation of the railway modal has only increased”, comments the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.
The costs of this transport to the ports – or from the ports to the destination, in the country, in the case of imports – is decisive in the choice of modal. However, according to Garcia, the infrastructure that the port offers for reception or loading is also essential for making rail transport more attractive.
“That is why we are investing in projects such as the exclusive hopper for the unloading of solid bulk goods by rail, the Moegão”, says Garcia. The public company has also encouraged private terminals to expand capacity for railcars in recent years.
HIGHWAY – Although 83.8% of the movement in January is still loaded or unloaded by trucks – the equivalent of 3,483,843 tons – the participation of the road modal dropped by almost 5%.
In 2021, in the same 31 days, 3,173,899 tons of cargo – equivalent to 88.2% – were transported along the country’s highways, heading to the ports of Paraná, or departing from the terminals.
In addition, 2.5% of the movement (104,953 tons) were liquids, transported through the pipeline.
PÁTIO – In the first month of this year, almost 26 thousand trucks passed through the Sorting Patio, before unloading soy, bran and corn in the Port of Paranaguá. The amount is more than double the 11,096 received in January 2021.
ORIGIN – Of the 655,883 tons of soybeans that came in trucks from the interior to unload at the Port of Paranaguá terminals, before going on to export, 50% (329,058 tons) originate in the State of Paraná. Next, the main states of origin of the cargo are Mato Grosso do Sul (16%) and Mato Grosso (10%).
Soybean meal, transported by truck from origin to port, amounted to 225,976 tons. Of this volume, 55% are from Paraná (123,509 tons), 21% from Goiás and 18% from Mato Grosso do Sul.
Of the 177,392 tons of corn that arrived for unloading by road transport, 75% (133,151 tons) came from Paraná, 14% from Mato Grosso and 6% from Mato Grosso do Sul.
