Ports of Paraná register a 2.4% increase in handling in the four-month period

The two ports of Paraná handled 18,692,904 tons of cargo from January to April this year, surpassing by 2.4% the total registered in the same period last year – 18,261,528 tons. With growth in all segments, exports exceeded imports in volume. In percentage increase, however, landings were higher.

In the first four months, 10,972,696 tons of products were exported through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina – 1% more than in 2021, when 10,818,074 tons were shipped. Of imported cargo, the accumulated volume in the period was 4% higher compared to last year: 7,720,208 tons this year against 7,443,454 tons in 2021.

“In exports, the best results were for corn, bran, vegetable oils, general cargo, petroleum derivatives and cellulose”, comments the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia. “Among imports, the highlight is the unloading of wheat, fertilizers and methanol”.

Cargo that arrives or leaves the ports of Paraná are from three main segments: solid bulk, general cargo and liquid bulk – the latter handled only by the Port of Paranaguá. Of solid bulk, in the four-month period, 11,589,498 tons were accumulated in both directions, 2% more than the 11,326,156 tons registered in 2021 in Paranaguá and Antonina.

General cargo handling grew at the same level of 2%. This year, 4,387,898 tons have already passed through the ports of Paraná. Last year, there were 4,294,782 tons. Among liquid bulk, the increase was slightly higher: 3%. From January to April, 2,715,508 tons were loaded and unloaded by Paranaguá. In 2021, 2,640,590 tons.

CONTAINERS – Among the loads handled by containers through the Port of Paranaguá, the increase registered was 3%. In the four-month period, this year, there were 362,232 TEUs. In 2021, 350,956 TEUs. In a specific unit equivalent to 20 feet and in percentage, exports exceeded imports in the segment. In the first four months of this year, 207,396 TEUs were exported – 5% more than last year’s 198,145 TEUs. The volume of cargo imported by containers reached 154,836 TEUs, 1% more than in 2021 (with 152,811 TEUs).

ANTONINA – Despite not operating with liquids or containers, cargo handling through the Port of Antonina increased by 80%. It’s the difference between this year’s 493,455 tonnes and last year’s 274,423. Imports of fertilizers (433,358 tons – 259% more than the 120,852 tons in 2021) and general cargo exports (sugar in sacks – 16,575 tons) increased. There were no exports of sugar in sacks in 2021.

APRIL – Specifically in April, the movement registered a drop of 14% in the ports of the State. This year, 4,613,609 tonnes were handled, compared to 5,391,766 tonnes in 2021. Although at a low level, products such as corn, sugar, vegetable oils and cellulose stood out, registering an increase in exports in the month. In terms of imports, the volume of malt/barley and oil derivatives landed also increased.
