Port of Paranaguá is the main flow structure for exports from Paraná

Businessmen from Paraná have the Port of Paranaguá as their main export route and contact with other countries. According to a survey by the Paraná Institute for Economic and Social Development (Ipardes) based on data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), in 2023 US$ 16,210,875,476 worth of Paraná products were exported through state terminals, which represents 64% of the R$25,278,475,649 exported in total over the last year. In the methodology, the federal government considers the location of the last processing of the merchandise as the Federation Unit of origin. “Proximity and logistical strategies are the strengths of Paraná’s ports, which is why we have been recognized by the federal government as the best port management in Brazil for four consecutive years. The result of these strategies is high productivity: in 2023 we broke the annual handling record of 65 million tons handled”, highlighted the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia. According to data from Portos do Paraná, among the most prominent cargoes is fertilizer, with the Port of Paranaguá being the main entry point for the commodity in the country. The port is also the largest frozen chicken export channel in the world, taking advantage of its leading role of Paraná in the segment, with a 34% share of national production, and is in second place nationally in the movement of soybeans for export. In 2023 alone, entrepreneurs from Paraná exported their products to 54 different destinations. Other locations in Paraná are on the list, such as Alfândega de Curitiba (US$ 39,959,028), in 18th, or close by, such as Alfândega de Dionísio Cerqueira, in Santa Catarina (US$ 69,505,746), in 15th. There are also records of exports in distant locations, such as the Port of Manaus (US$665,592), Port of Vitória (US$357,650) and Rio de Janeiro International Airport (US$409,649). After Paranaguá, the Port of São Francisco do Sul, with US$ 2,949,841,942, the Federal Revenue Inspectorate of São Borja (US$ 995,404,968), the Port of Santos (US$ 888,155,343), Customs of Uruguaiana (US$ 847,811,074), Customs of Foz do Iguaçu (US$ 703,336,606), Port of Itajaí (US$ 618,052,568), Port of Rio Grande (US$ 494,620,436 ) and Guarulhos International Airport (US$ 325,163,928). PARANÁ IN PARANAGUÁ – Another Ipardes study based on MDIC data points out that the US$ 16,210,875,476 in Paraná products exported by Paranaguá represent more than 50% of the portfolio of states that the Paraná public company serves. In 2023, products from 24 Federation Units were also exported. In addition to Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul (US$ 4,084,451,517), Mato Grosso (US$ 2,628,409,844), São Paulo (US$ 2,368,041,517), Goiás (US$ 1,379,633,165), Santa Catarina (US$788,629,977) and Rio Grande do Sul (US$472,706,973). “The data demonstrates that the Port of Paranaguá is used by exporters from all over the country. In other words, it is strategic not only for Paraná, but also for Brazil”, stated the director-president of Ipardes, Jorge Callado. GENERAL EXPORTS – With revenue of US$25,278,475,649 from sales to other countries in 2023, Paraná established a new annual export record. The value was 13.7% higher than the result obtained by the State in 2022, when revenue was US$22.1 billion, and also represents growth well above the national figure, which was just 1.7% in the same period. In total, goods produced in the State landed in 215 destinations. The biggest buyers were China (US$7.1 billion), Argentina (US$1.5 billion) and the United States (US$1.4 billion), responsible for 28%, 6.3% and 5. 8%, respectively, of the total sold by Paraná in 2023. Mexico appears in fourth, closing the “billion list”, with US$ 1.021 billion. As has happened in previous years, soybeans were once again the main highlight of Paraná’s exports, accounting for 23.5% of the total sold by the State abroad in 2023. Next, fresh chicken meat appears (with a share of 14. 5%), soybean meal (7.7%), cereals (5%) and raw sugar (4.5%).
