The Paraná ports showed a 12% total movement growth in the first quarter of 2024. There were 21,377,501 tons moved from January to April, against 19,060,512 tons in the same period last year. The highlight in volume goes to the export of sugar, with 1,640,273 tons moved in the period, representing a growth of 119% compared to 2023 (747,657 tons).
In addition to bulk sugar, bag sugar also increased from 105,572 tons in 2023, it went to 206,740 tons in 2024 (96%). “India is our main destination and follows with increasing demand due to climate issues lived by the country. The attractiveness in prices and the great demand for the product follow high here, ”said the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.
“Paranaguá’s operational capacity also allows for a more agile and efficient movement, which attracts the eyes of the market. Proof of this was the eight months of general movement records recorded between August 2023 and March this year. In April, we followed with high commodity movement numbers, ”said Gabriel Vieira, Port Operations Director.
Other highlights
In addition to sugar, other loads showed significant growth in the moved volume in this quarter compared to 2023. In export, soy went from 3,703,668 tons to 4,985,019 tons (35%). Container movement also increased from 368,718 TEUs (20 feet in container length) to 509,230 TEUs (38%), consolidating the port of Paranaguá as the second largest in container movement, behind only Santos. Regarding imports, the fertilizer was 3,054,589 tons to 3,179,252 tons (4%), which is the main entry channel of commodity in the country.
Production record
Paraná, which is the largest state producing everything that the port of Paranaguá exports, also broke the record this quarter. The survey conducted by the Paraná Institute for Economic and Social Development (Ipardes) using data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC) shows that the state exported US $ 7.47 billion in the period. Paraná exceeded 1.6% of the revenues recorded in the same period of 2023 (US $ 7.35 billion). Gross sugar, which was fourth in the best-selling products abroad, totaled US $ 367.8 million, an increase of 120.5% compared to the first four months of 2023.
