The share of the rail modal in the transport of cargo through the ports of Paraná rose from 19.6% in 2021 to 20.2% in 2022, almost one percentage point. Considering the first nine months of the year, 9,022,935 tons of products arrived or left in wagons. In the same period last year, 8,752,258 tons.
“It may even seem like a small increase, but when we talk about participation in the rail modal, any percentage point of increase is significant, especially if we consider that the rail structure is the same, which will change with the projects we are implementing”, said the director. of Operations at Portos do Paraná, Luiz Teixeira da Silva Júnior.
While the use of the railroad increased, the volume of cargo by road modal registered a small decrease, from 77.9% from January to September 2021 to 77.1% this year. There were 34,383,334 tons moved in trucks in 2022; last year, there were 34,641,812 tons.
In terms of cargo specification, there was an increase in the volume of liquid bulk handled by the Port of Paranaguá. In 2021, in the nine months, 1,091,957 tons (31%) arrived via this route. This year, 1,186,501 tons (33.15%). Among them, only petroleum derivatives also use the railroad. Of the 3,579,189 total tons of products handled this year, 420,852 tons (11.76%) arrived or left in wagons. The other 1,971,836 tons were on highways (55.09%).
“The participation of the railway modal has increased significantly in the transport of oil products”, highlights Teixeira. In 2021, only 7% of the 3,475,986 tons were handled in wagons, that is, 231,582 tons. The remainder, 62%, by road: 2,152,447 tons.
PRODUCTS – The products that most use the railroad to arrive or leave the ports of Paraná were sugar (80.4% in wagons); corn (35.39%); soybean (20.86%); soybean meal (20.09%); containers (14.03%); and petroleum derivatives (11.76%).
“The numbers from these first three quarters of the year prove that our efforts to equalize the participation of modes have been successful, especially by increasing the use of rail transport”, says the Director of Operations.
According to him, with the advancement of projects such as the “Moegão” (East Pier), for centralized railway unloading, the tendency is for it to increase even more, with better results. “The focus of the project is the solid bulk export segment and the railroad. However, with what we are proposing, the results will be beneficial to all other segments and also to road transport and the community”, completes Teixeira, referring mainly to the reduction of road/railway interference.
With the capacity to receive up to 180 wagons simultaneously, the expectation is that the Moegão will allow the unloading of over 24 million tons of grains and bran per year.
