Imports boost high in port movement in Paraná

Imports pushed cargo handling through the ports of Paraná in the first four months of the year. With significant increases in the discharge of products from the General Cargo and Solid Bulk segments, the Paranaguá and Antonina terminals handled 18,262,189 tons, from January to April.

“We closed the first four months of the year with a movement 1% higher than that registered in the same period, in 2020. The rains and the delay in the arrival of soybeans affected exports, while imports increased by 12% in the period”, explains the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.

Of the total volume, 7,444,115 tons of foreign cargo entered Brazil in 2021. Last year, there were 6,628,630 tons. “Purchases of various products, which arrive in containers, for example, grew by 25%. In solid bulk, the highlight is the landing of malt and barley, which grew 21%, and fertilizers, 12% ”.

FERTILIZERS – Fertilizers represented around 43% of the total products imported through the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina. In the first four months of the year, there were 3,221,386 tons of imported fertilizers. In the same period, in 2020, there were 2,875,263 tons.

Considering only April imports, 830,191 tons of fertilizers were discharged – 13% more than in the same 31 days, in 2020, with 734,234 tons.

The Port of Paranaguá remains the main port of entry for fertilizers arriving in Brazil. Imports through Paraná’s terminals account for more than 30% of the product imported into the country’s fields.

BEER INDUSTRY – In a lower volume, but with a higher percentage of increase when comparing the periods of 2021 and 2020, the discharge of malt and barley totaled 234,977 tons this year. The products are used as raw material for the beer industry and had a 21% increase compared to the first four months of last year, when 193,560 tons were imported.

Considering the movement only in the last month of April, the increase registered in imports reached 2,511%. While in April 2020, 2,998 tons of barley and malt were imported; this year, in the month, there were 78,260 tons.

GENERAL CARGO – In the general cargo segment, the first quarter of 2021 registered 1,785,909 tons of imported products. In the same period, the previous year, there were 1,427,162 tons.

In the month of April alone, the increase registered in the 20/21 comparison was 8%. In the last month, 422,838 tons of general cargo were imported. In 2020, in the same 31 days, 391,333 tons.
