The historical movement in the national import of fertilizers was reflected in the volume landed by the ports of Paraná. Main ports of entry for the product in Brazil, as much fertilizer was imported through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina as in the first half of the year: 5,197,527 tons.
In relation to the 4,529,969 tons handled in the same six months of 2020, the volume this year was 14.74% higher. Last June alone, there were 1,059,933 tons – the largest fertilizer discharge ever recorded in the state.
Compared to the movement registered in the last month of May, 916,924 tons, the importation of fertilizers grew around 15.6%. In comparison with June 2020, when 706,852 tonnes were landed, the increase was almost 50%.
HISTORY – In just three other months, in previous years, the volume of fertilizers unloaded from the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina exceeded one million tons. “But none reached the total reached in the last month of June”, says the Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná, Luiz Teixeira da Silva Júnior.
In November and December 2018, there were 1,006,771 and 1,014,264 tons, respectively. In July 2020, 1,000,863 tons of bulk were unloaded.
“Through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina come around 31% of everything that Brazil imports in fertilizers. In addition to being the main importer of the products, we are also a reference in terms of efficiency in unloading these bulks”, says Teixeira.
OPERATORS – Of the 24 berths available in the ports of Paraná, at least seven are unloaded fertilizers: three at the commercial wharf of the Port of Paranaguá (208, 209 and 211); two berths on a private pier and two berths at the Port of Antonina.
“In addition to the three priority berths at the Port of Paranaguá, the fertilizer ships can operate in any other public berth, when it is vacant”, explains Luiz Teixeira da Silva Júnior, Operations Director at Portos do Paraná.
3,366,566 tonnes were handled through the public berths of the commercial wharf of Paranaguá in the first half of the year. In the same period, in 2020, there were 2,865,300 tons. Through these berths, three companies unload fertilizers in the port of Paraná (Harbor, Rocha and Fortesolo), in addition to TCP, which receives the product in containers.
Through the berths of the private port terminal, located in the Port of Paranaguá, 1,583,533 tons were unloaded. The volume is 6% higher than the 1,493,090 tons registered in the same period, in 2020.
Through the private terminal that operates at the Port of Antonina, TPPF, 247,428 tons of fertilizer were landed in the first half. Compared to 171,579 tons recorded in 2020, the increase was 44%.
A small volume of fertilizer is imported in liquid form. This year there were about five thousand tons.
SEGMENT – The Union of the Industry of Fertilizers and Agricultural Correctives in the State of Paraná (Sindiadubos) confirms the significant increase in the import of products.
“Agricultural producers have taken advantage of the good exchange ratio – that is, spending on fertilizers X production value – to supply themselves for the next harvests, at the end of this year and beginning of 2022”, explains executive manager Décio Luiz Gomes.
CURIOSITY – The main origins of fertilizers arriving through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina are Russia (23%), China (21%), Canada (8.4%), Belarus (7%) and Qatar (6.5%).
Among the fertilizers that arrive through the ports of Paraná are, mainly, potassium chloride (MOP), urea, MAP (monoammonium phosphate); ammonium sulfate and NPK complexes.
