Cargo volume of the rail modal grows 6.4% in the ports of Paraná

The products that most increased their participation in the rail modal, from January to April, were corn, soybeans, fertilizers, petroleum derivatives and containers. In the period, 3,112,320 tons were transported by rail, which represents 16% of the total handled.

The volume of cargo that arrives and leaves the ports of Paraná by rail increased by 6.4% in the first four months, compared to the same period last year – there were 3,112,320 tons by this modal and 18,695,084 tons of general cargo. Although the participation by rail remained at 16% in both years, the volume grew: from January to April 2021, 2,924,813 tons were transported by rail compared to a total movement of 18,286,534.

The products that most increased their participation in the modal were corn, soy, fertilizers, oil derivatives and containers. “On trains, we receive corn, soybeans, bran, some cargo in containers – such as chicken – and sugar, in products destined for export”, says the Director of Operations, Luiz Teixeira da Silva Júnior.

According to him, in the opposite direction, they leave for the interior in wagons, mainly fertilizers, also some volume of containerized cargo and oil derivatives.

In the first four months of last year, 7% of the volume of corn exported by the Port of Paranaguá arrived in wagons. This year, it rose to 11%. For soybeans, it went from 28% to 29%. Among fertilizers destined for the interior, this share went from 2% to 5%. “The increase in the transport of petroleum products and containers in wagons stands out even more”, comments Teixeira.

From the net, from no volume arriving or leaving by train, from January to April 2021, it went to a 12% share in the modal.

Regarding containerized cargo, 13% of the entire volume handled in the period (3,771,363 tons) arrived or left the port by rail, in the first four months of the year. Last year, they were 8% of the total of 3,680,683 tons.

“We have projects advancing to increase, even more, the participation of the rail modal in the ports of Paraná”, mentions the Director of Operations. “For example, Klabin installing itself at the terminal in the port area will bring the train back to the side”.

Two works by the State with the objective of further promoting this transport are Nova Ferroeste and the project Cais Leste (Moegão), in the bidding phase.
