With 58 million tons handled, Paraná reaches a new record in ports

Port movement in the State of Paraná reached a new record level. In 2022, 58,399,285 tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded through the Paraná terminals, an increase of 1.53%. The historic mark surpasses the highest previous record, which was from 2021: 57,519,879 tons. “We closed another year with historic movement in the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, thanks to the commitment of all the workers and the efforts of the terminals and port operators with the objective of maintaining efficiency and productivity”, says the director-president of Portos do Paraná , Luiz Fernando Garcia. According to him, compared to the movement of 2019, when the work of this management started, the leap is even greater: 9.6%. In that year, handling reached 53,203,775 tons of cargo. In 2020 there were 57,339,307 tons. 2022 – The largest volume is in products exported through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina. In 2022, shipments of cargo abroad totaled 35,535,711 tons of cargo, 9.31% more than in 2021, with 32,508,471 tons. The number of moorings was also higher – 2,539 receptions of vessels in 2022. There are 75 more than in 2021. The products most exported by the ports of Paraná were soy, soy bran, sugar, corn, chicken, vegetable oils, wood, fuels, paper and beef. Among these, with the exception of soy, cellulose and fuels, all others increased. The most significant occurred in shipments of corn (+535.5%), beef (+113.1%), vegetable oils, mainly soy oil (+30.8%), paper (+26%) and wood ( +14.8%). Despite having recorded a decline, soy is the main product exported by the ports of Paraná. Last year, 10,012,450 tons were shipped. In 2021, 13,208,676 tons. The drop (-24.1%) is a reflection of the oilseed’s behavior in the field, where the drought compromised the harvest result. IMPORTS – Among imports for the year, with a volume of 19,932,513 tons, there was a decrease in 2022, compared to the previous year (-10.6%). In 2021, cargo unloading at Paraná ports totaled 22,308,089 tons. “The negative impact on the volume of cargo imported by the terminals in Paraná came from fertilizers, following the downward movement observed in the general movement of the product in the country”, explains the CEO. Through the ports of Paraná, in 2022, 10,075,277 tons of fertilizers were imported, 15.6% less than in 2021, with 11,948,004 tons. fertilizers fell from 41,572,778 tons in 2021 to 38,202,010 tons in 2022, a reduction of 8.1%. “During the past, the entire fertilizer market behaved in a very different way, compared to previous years”, comments Garcia. In 2022, there was an anticipation in the importation of fertilizers, mainly in the months of January, February, March and May. “It was a phenomenon linked to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Fertilizer prices have risen, which has made producers use less of the input in order to save money”, adds the executive.
