Port of Paranaguá embarks record volume on a single ship

A new record shipment is being carried out in the Export Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá, this week. In berth 214, the ship E.R Bayonne carries 104.2 thousand tons of soybean meal. This is the largest export bulk volume ever handled by the port.

It is the second shipment of the year, and history, which exceeds one hundred thousand tons. The other was the Pacific South which, in June, carried just over 103 thousand tons.

“The Port of Paranaguá is a bulk port, a reference in the international market and among Brazilian exporters due to its efficiency and unique model, adopted in the Export Corridor, which guarantees agility in the shipment of bulk goods. These factors mean that, more and more, massive shipments happen here ”, says the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.

According to him, the trend is to receive more and more large bulk carriers. “Paraná is already preparing the remodeling, modernization and repowering project for the Export Corridor, which will allow our ports to be even more competitive”, says the president.

GIANT – The vessel arrived at dawn on Monday (20) and started loading in the morning, despite the fog. The cargo that begins to fill the holds of the ship arrives from three different terminals: Cotriguaçu, Coamo and Public Silos (horizontal). There are four operators involved in loading (Céu Azul, Gransol, Cotrigraçu and Coamo) and the bulk comes from five exporters: Agrária, Cocamar, Cargill, Coamo and ADM.

E.R Bayonne has the flag of Liberia. Like the Pacific South, which in June carried just over 103 thousand tons, this ship also measures 292 meters in length and 45.05 meters in width and has nine holds (two more than vessels that normally carry bulk through ports) Paraná).

LARGE SIZE – The soybean meal loaded in Paranaguá will be taken to the port of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. The operation in the port of Paraná should be completed by Friday (24), the date scheduled for the ship’s departure.

The director of operations for Portos do Paraná, Luiz Teixeira da Silva Júnior, states that the ports in Paraná are prepared in maritime and land infrastructure to receive and operate large vessels and large volumes of cargo. “We are attentive to this market for large ships and make all operational adjustments, in the berths, to receive them”, he guarantees.

According to Teixeira, this type of super ship does not generally operate directly, as is commonly done with vessels up to 225 meters. “This type of ship, due to its size, needs to turn to load, which demands more mooring time. In return, they take twice the amount of cargo from a vessel that we have most often (65 thousand tons) ”, he adds.

“The arrival of this second ship indicates a market trend. If the market points to this type of larger ship, the Port of Paranaguá must evolve and build the necessary conditions, for maritime, land and storage infrastructure, to meet ”, says Teixeira.

According to him, freight per ton, used for bulk shipments, makes the product exported by Paranaguá even more competitive. “Paranaguá has a history in the movement of soybean meal, due to the factories installed in the area of influence, which increase demand. We have strength and tradition in loading the product ”, he concludes. Currently, the Port of Paranaguá is the second in the country to export soybean meal.

OPERATORS – According to the director of the Association of Terminals of the Paranaguá Export Corridor (Atexp), André Maragliano, this second large shipment is the result of public company investments and the performance that the bulk export segment has been achieving this year, month after month.

He mentions the reinforcement of the berths, expansion of the draft (today of 12.5 meters), exchange of the shiploaders. “Today, we are capturing the result of these investments. In addition, we have the mooring rules that were changed, in the search for greater efficiency and, thus, reduced the times and demurrage payments (surcharge). This greatly improved the attractiveness of the Port of Paranaguá ”, he highlights.

According to Maragliano, another factor that contributes to the demand would be the volume of export of origin (mainly from Paraná), which grew with the good harvest harvested and the current market conditions, such as exchange and price.
