Two months before the end of the year, the port of Paranaguá has already beaten the annual historical record of exports of soy, bran, wheat and vegetable oil. From January to October, the port exported 19.2 million tons of these products. The amount is 13% higher than that achieved in the whole of last year, when it was 17 million tonnes.
The highlight was the export of soybeans: 13,177,790 tons moved in just 10 months. The number is 15% higher than the accumulated of 2017 (11,409,189 tons).
The director of Ports Administration of Paranaguá and Antonina, Lourenço Fregonese, attributes the results to the increase of the capacity of the port of Paraná, along with the productivity of the field.
“In recent years we have invested more than R $ 940 million in the upgrading and modernization of the physical structure of the Port of Paranaguá. The actions included the exchange of ship loaders for larger equipment and with greater capacity of grain disposal, construction of new access gates, installation of new scales and conveyor belts, as well as changes in the quay, which was refurbished and dredged, “he added. account.
Another concern was to clear the roads and access roads to the port, ending the queues of trucks and increasing the safety of the community. “In addition to the Online Cargo system, which organized the unloading at the Sorting Patio, we are investing in important works for the residents, such as the Recovery of Bento Rocha Avenue and the new viaduct at the entrance to the city,” he adds.
Bran, wheat and vegetable oils: The movement of bran is already 7% higher than that registered in the previous year. There were 4.8 million tonnes exported in 2018, compared with 4.5 million tonnes in 2017.
Wheat exports exceeded 28% last year, with 216,787 tons between January and October 2018.
In the movement of vegetable oils, the increase was 9%, going from 935,611 tons to just over 1 million tons.
Other products – Considering all products, the Port of Paranaguá has already reached 86% of the 2017 traffic, which was the highest in the history of the Paraná terminal. The accumulated in 2018 totals 44.4 million tons, while last year recorded 51.5 million.
Appa’s chief operating officer Luiz Teixeira said two factors should have an impact on this year’s numbers: the truckers’ strike in May and the heavy rainfall, especially in October.
“During the strike period, 648 thousand tons of products, including liquids, general cargoes, grains, fertilizers and others, were not moved,” he says.
In October, 16 days of rain paralyzed mainly the loading of grains and the discharge of fertilizers. “The port does not load grain and bran with rain and does not discharge fertilizers. We can not risk the grain getting moist as it ferments and spoils. It happens all over the world, it’s an issue that is beyond our control, “he explains.
